Tar Heel Nation

The Carolina Tar Heels are one of the most well-known collegiate basketball teams in America, with thousands of fans across the country. The Tar Heels play their home games at the Dean Smith Center, named after Head Coach Dean Smith. The Smith Center has been the home of the Tar Heels since 1986 and is a symbol of Carolina Basketball. The Tar Heels have won six NCAA National Championship titles, not including their 1924 award for a perfect season before the NCAA was created. The Heels have certainly had their ups and downs, but Carolina fans will always support them.

National Championship Titles

The Tar Heels have won six National Championship titles so far.

1957

Coached by Frank McGuire, the 1957 Tar Heels win the National Championship against the Kansas ...Jayhawks. This was the Tar Heel's historic first NCAA Championship title.

1982

The 1982 Tar Heels, coached by Dean Smith, won the national title with a 63–62 victory in the ...championship game over Georgetown.

1993

The 1993 Tar Heels finished 34-4 overall, won the ACC season title, and won the 1993 national ...championship. They were coached by Dean Smith, who won his second national championship in his thirty-second season as coach.

2005

In the 2005 championship game, Illinois was playing for their first national championship win, while ...the Tar Heels played for their fourth. Lead by Roy Williams, the Tar Heels did win their fourth National Championship.

2009

Coached by Roy Williams, the Tar Heels beat the Michigan State Spartans and won their ...fifth National Championship.

2017

In 2016, the Tar Heels suffered a heart-breaking loss at the championship game. Just a year later, the ...Tar Heels played the Gonzaga Bulldogs and Coach Roy Williams lead them to redemption; their sixth National Championship.

Star Players

These six athletes are considered UNC's best men's basketball players of all time.

1955-1957

Lennie Rosenbluth was one of the great Tar Heel players in the 1950’s. He led the Tar Heels... to their first ever NCAA Championship in 1957. In his sophomore season, he was UNC's leading scorer and third team All-American.

1974-1978

Phil Ford is the best point guard in Tar Heel history. He was given the ACC Player of the... Year award in his senior season and was the first player in ACC history to score over 2,000 points.

1979-1982

James Worthy, known as Big Game James,was the star of the 1982 NCAA Championship Game... where he scored 28 points. For this, he was selected as the Final Four Most Outstanding Player.

1981-1984

Michael Jordan was the 1982 ACC Freshman of the Year and the 1984 ACC Player of the Year. Jordan ...famously hit the game-winning jumper in the 1982 NCAA Championship game against Georgetown. He is arguably the most well-known UNC basketball player.

1995-1998

Antawn Jamison won most of the National Player of the Year awards in his third and final season ...with the Tar Heels. Jamison is one of eight Tar Heel players to have their jersey and number retired.

2006-2009

Tyler Hansbrough was listed on an All-American list all four years of his basketball career. He holds... the NCAA record for made free throws in a career (982). In 2008, he won the Wooden Award and was National Player of the Year.

1946 - 1952

Coach Tom Scott coached the Tar Heels for 6 seasons. In his last two seasons, UNC had losing ...records, so he was consequently replaced.

1952 - 1961

Frank McGuire guided North Carolina to an undefeated 32-0 season in 1956-57 and earned ...one National Championship for the Tar Heels. However, after major NCAA violations, McGuire was forced to resign.

1961 - 1997

Called a “coaching legend” by the Basketball Hall of Fame, Coach Dean Smith lead the Tar Heels ...to two National Championships. He retired with 879 victories and had the 9th highest winning percentage of any men’s basketball coach.

1997 - 2000

Bill Guthridge served as Dean Smith's assistant for 30 years. Following Dean Smith's retirement ...in 1997, Guthridge served as head coach of the Tar Heels for three seasons.

2000 - 2003

Matt Doherty played basketball for North Carolina before ultimately coaching the Tar Heels, the ...Notre Dame Fighting Irish, and the Florida Atlantic Owls. Now, he serves as the Atlantic 10 Conference's associate commissioner.

2003 - present

Roy Williams began his career as Dean Smith’s assistant coach. Now, Head Coach Williams has won ...three national championships, eight Atlantic Coast Conference titles, and two ACC Coach of the Year awards.
